“I think the training went great. You provided a lot of good information that we need.”
Fully accredited. Globally recognized. Built for the next generation of Addiction & Mental Health Professionals.
The Certified Sober Companion & Safe Transport Program at The Addictions Academy offers a rigorous, evidence-based curriculum designed to professionalize a critical yet historically unstructured role within the recovery ecosystem. In addition to sober companionship, this program includes comprehensive Safe Transport Training, preparing graduates to provide ethical, safe, and effective client escort services from treatment programs, to medical or therapeutic appointments, and beyond.
While sober companionship has existed for decades, it has largely relied on informal peer-support structures, most often rooted in personal recovery experience. Today’s landscape demands a more formalized approach. As the field expands beyond traditional 12-step paradigms, clients increasingly require diverse, non-12-step support options delivered by practitioners with advanced training and demonstrated competence. This program meets that demand.
Participants will enhance their recovery-oriented "lived experience" with structured training in ethics, legal frameworks, harm reduction, and professional boundaries. The program emphasizes applied learning—daily schedules, client engagement strategies, and treatment team integration—while grounding participants in the practical realities of risk management, mental health considerations, and family systems.
Clear scope-of-practice distinctions (companion vs coach vs sponsor) and HIPAA-aligned confidentiality.
Contracts that define relapse protocols, reportable situations, and non-negotiables
Liability readiness: LLC structure, bonding/insurance, subpoena resilience, and documentation discretion.
Vehicle and vendor policies
Airport/flight procedures for intoxicated clients, pacing strategies, and in-route de-escalation.
Opposite-sex accountability, elopement prevention, social-media containment, and safety-first decision trees.
Open-ended questioning, breath work, movement, and behavior interruption.
Routines, job-readiness, budgeting, hygiene, nutrition, and practical “adulting” skills.
Trigger mapping and response: visual/auditory/olfactory cues, craving loops, and rapid reframe tactics.
Brain chemistry literacy and patterns and how drug of choice signals deficits.
Evidence-informed harm reduction: when moderation is plausible, when it is not (e.g., opiates/benzos).
Nutrition and supplementation as coaching levers
Calibrating family involvement; removing clients from chaotic environments when indicated.
Working incognito and managing luxury travel, wardrobe, and billing.
Addressing process addictions in families that undermine client recovery.
Pricing ethics and transparency; day-rate models vs. multi-companion shift work
Treatment-center outreach, referral partnerships, and vetting employers.

20 CEU/CME/CE/Hrs
Each course is designed to meet the global standards, with clear objectives, real-world application, and evidence-based frameworks. You’ll study:
This opening session lays the foundation for the profession. Students learn how the sober companion role emerged, why safe transport fills a critical gap in recovery care, and how to establish credibility in a field that has long operated informally. The training explores ethical boundaries, contract structures, pricing models, and real-world case studies to show how professionals can build a sustainable career while keeping both client and provider safe.
In this session, the focus shifts to the legal and ethical challenges that come with companion work. Through harm reduction protocols and practical boundaries, you'll learn how to protect yourself while supporting clients who may not fit into abstinence-only models. The session emphasizes integrity, discretion, and client-centered care.
Here, students go deeper into the intersection of law, ethics, and behavior. Training covers liability insurance, bonding, subpoenas, confidentiality strategies, and the importance of professional documentation. On the behavioral side, students learn how to identify relapse warning signs, use neurochemical insights, and implement coaching techniques that disrupt addictive cycles. The session combines legal clarity with practical, on-the-ground coaching tools.
Students explore how to navigate toxic family systems, manage boundary violations, and maintain neutrality even with difficult clients. Practical tools include craving interruption frameworks, real-time coaching strategies, energy management, and cultural sensitivity when working with high-profile clients. The training reinforces that sober companions are more than chaperones—they are educators and change agents.
Blending neuroscience with hands-on coaching, this session shows how brain chemistry drives addiction and recovery. Students learn how neurotransmitter imbalances affect mood and cravings, why process addictions (like gaming, shopping, or sex) mirror substance abuse, and how to apply nutritional and supplemental strategies to aid recovery.
Tips on detox placement, sober companion protocol, social media strategy, and crisis handling. From marketing ethics to midnight relapses and handling high-risk clients, this session is packed with real-world stories, tactical insights, and candid coaching advice for recovery professionals and sober companions looking to grow their business, serve clients more effectively, and build long-term success in the addiction recovery space.
This 50+ page professional training manual is your step-by-step playbook for sober companion work. It breaks down the roles, responsibilities, and daily practices of companions and safe transport providers, covering everything from ethics and legal considerations to contracts, relapse protocols, and family dynamics. Inside, you’ll find clear explanations of recovery stages, craving cycles, and relapse triggers—plus practical tools like action planning templates, food/mood journals, and weekly planners you can use immediately with clients. Real-world case scenarios show you exactly how to handle transport, live-in assignments, and high-risk situations. Concise, practical, and grounded in real experience, this manual gives you the professional edge to serve clients effectively and confidently while building a sustainable sober companion practice.

Sober on Demand defines: An individual that has 5 years of sobriety is bonded, insured, and certified. They can live in your residence, and accompany you to events, work, gym, grocery, meetings, outings, and more and help you stay sober as you re-enter your life and the workforce. They can also accompany you as a sober escort to an event like a wedding, business meeting, or short-term event where a high-risk situation like drugs, alcohol, or sex will be present. A sober companion will help you overcome triggers, install coping skills, assist with budget/finance, daily living duties, and even help with anxiety, depression, mental health issues, and eating disorders. They are not babysitters and will provide as much help or as little as needed.
Absolutely. This certification adds specialized skills and credibility that complement your current role. Many treatment centers now rely on sober companions and safe transport providers to support clients outside the clinical environment — during transitions, high-risk events, or re-entry into daily life. By holding a national certification, you set yourself apart as a professional who can bridge the gap between inpatient care and real-world recovery, making you more valuable to both your employer and the clients you serve.
A sober companion is with you in person in your space (home, office, hotel) and for a specific length of time, and can travel with you nationally and internationally. A therapist will meet you in their office for 1 hour at a time to discuss your issues or work by phone or the internet. Therapists are licensed and sober companions are nationally certified, insured, and bonded. A 12 step sponsor is a peer that offers free, peer-driven support. A sober companion is a trained, certified, insured, and bonded professional individual that will assist from a professional standpoint and offer guidance, life skills, trigger management and assist with other duties. Sponsors have no real formal training other than having experienced an addiction, whereas certified sober companions have the lived experience as well both also have formal and professional training.
While there is no state or federal guideline, you should have 5 years of sobriety, be bonded, and be insured with experience. The Addictions Academy has offered the first national certification and credential as a certified sober companion.
Most sober companions make between $300 to $2500 per day (a 24-hour span) for services. Clients that will pay this higher rate to expect high-quality education and training and value for services not just being drug to meetings and running life errands. The lower pay rate you can find at a lot of the companies offering sober support services as a pay structure for their staff.
Most students complete the training and earn their certification in 8 to 10 weeks. You’ll have access to on-demand video modules, plus 10 weeks of live mentorship, so you can move at your own pace with expert guidance along the way.
