What is a Family Recovery Coach?
A Family Recovery Coach is a trained professional who helps the loved ones of someone struggling with addiction. While most support focuses on the person with the addiction, a Family Coach supports the family system helping parents, partners, siblings, or adult children navigate the emotional chaos, set healthy boundaries, and begin their own healing journey.
Family Coaches are not therapists. They don’t diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Instead, they use practical tools, education, and structured guidance to:
- Break cycles of enabling and codependency
- Restore clarity, stability, and communication at home
- Empower families to support a loved one without losing themselves
- Help family members reclaim their peace, purpose, and power
In short: A Family Recovery Coach helps the people around the addict heal whether or not their loved one ever gets sober.
What kinds of families will I be trained to help?
You’ll be trained to support parents, partners, siblings, and extended family members of individuals struggling with substance use. You'll also learn how to handle high-conflict situations, resistance, enabling behavior, and crisis response.
How is this different from becoming a therapist or counselor?
Coaching is future-focused, action-oriented, and designed to create real-time change. You’ll learn how to support families without diagnosing, prescribing, or digging into deep clinical work. It’s faster, more flexible, and often more relatable for families in crisis.
Do I need a degree or clinical background to take this training?
No. This training is designed for both professionals and people with lived experience. You don’t need a counseling degree or therapy license just a desire to help families heal, and a willingness to learn. We’ll teach you everything you need to coach ethically, effectively, and with confidence.
How long does it take to complete the program?
Most students complete the training and earn their certification in 8 to 10 weeks. You’ll have access to on-demand video modules, plus 10 weeks of live mentorship, so you can move at your own pace with expert guidance along the way.
